Contour grinding of glass is a finishing method in which the edges of a sheet of glass or mirror are accurately ground to a specific shape or contour. This method is well suited for glass with complex or non-rectangular contours: round, oval or an irregular shape.
Contour grinding is a technically intensive process, consisting of three parts: preprocessing, application of the appropriate grinding technique, and finishing.
In preprocessing, we first cut the glass to size before further manual or machine grinding. Then, depending on the intended end result, we choose grinding with the CNC-controlled grinding machine or manual grinding techniques. This involves applying the desired contour.
Finally, the glass can be further polished for a smooth edge finish. Which edge finish is best depends on what the glass is intended for.
There are many applications for contour-cut glass. For example, the optical industry makes extensive use of it. Consider precision components such as lenses and beamsplitters. We also regularly supply contour-cut glass to clients in the technical industry, for example for medical instruments or for use in semiconductors. And finally, of course, contour-cut glass also has great decorative value. With contour grinding, we can realize unique designs for furniture designers and architects, for example.
